Editors' Choice Gaming Accessory

3rd Space FPS Vest

Reviewed by Angie Kibiloski

I want to tell you about the coolest gaming accessory that I have seen in a while. It is called the 3rd Space Vest (Retail $169), from TN Games. This gaming vest will take you to the next level in PC FPS (First Person Shooter) gaming, putting you physically into the action like never before. With impact generating technology, you experience the feel of gunfire, explosions, punches, etc, where they happen to your character on screen. If you get shot in the back, you will feel the impact at that spot on your back. Instead of just seeing your screen flash red and your health meter deplete, you are physically aware that you are getting pummeled. It's really an incredible experience, and very motivating too. I am not usually an avid FPS gamer, I just don't normally get into the kill or be killed mentality. But when I put the 3rd Space Vest on, and I felt these bad guys shooting me in the chest, the back, the stomach, it was like I suddenly had a reason to fight back. It was ME who was getting shot in the back, not just my virtual character on screen, and I wanted to make those villains stop poking me. It made me a much more competitive player, and held my attention in the game. Even after dying, an embarrassing number of times, I wanted to get back in there and kick some bad guy booty!

The 3rd Space Vest works by utilizing a lightweight air compressor to trigger 8 pneumatic cells, within the vest, to deliver an impact of varying intensity to the gamer. Each cell has the capacity for up to 10 pounds of pressure, so the force of the impact can simulate a wide range of situations, like getting tapped on the shoulder (creepy), getting shot, or getting a back lash from a grenade. The vest comes in 2 sizes, with easily adjustable straps to customize for each individual, and fits comfortably. You can choose from black or camo.

The vest is packaged with the TN Games original title, Incursion. You can also go to the TN Games website at http://www.tngames.com to download patches for 3 other pre-existing games, to format them for the vest. These titles are Quake 3, Quake 4, and Doom 3. In addition, there is a driver that can be downloaded that will enhance even more games by adding the 3rd Space effects to them. Please go to the Web site for a complete list.

Now, you might think, "Why would I want someone poking me in the ribs while I am playing a game? That doesn't sound fun." I was a skeptic too, but then I tried the vest on. I love this product! I truly feel that you cannot fully appreciate a FPS game without this vest, because this is the only product that puts you so completely in the game. Do you want to get the most out of your First Person Shooter? Do you want to feel like you are really in the action? Get the 3rd Space Vest and do just that, by pumping up the intensity of your gaming experience.

Coming in Fall 2008, you can take this experience even farther, with a full body 3rd Space system. Soon you will not only be able to buy the vest, but a helmet, arm, and leg sleeves as well. TN Games will also be bringing this technology to a vest for racing enthusiasts. The 3rd Space G-Force Racing Vest will be available later in 2008, and will simulate the feel of being inside a race car.
