IGOR: The Game

Reviewed by Angie Kibiloski

IGOR: The Game (Retail $29.99), is an adorable puzzle game for the Nintendo DS, published by SouthPeak Games. It is based on the recently released animated feature film, IGOR. The film itself is really cute, and presents kids with a message of love and acceptance, while telling the story of an ambitious Igor, trying to make his way in a world full of evil scientists and a host of other crazy characters. The plot of the movie culminates in a tournament of the evil inventions that all the scientists, as well as Igor, have created. This game revolves around the tournament aspect of the movie.

Igor has invented a glorious creature, Eva, to enter into the annual evil science fair tournament, just like in the movie. Unfortunately, she has been kidnapped by none other than his arch rival for 1st place, Dr. Schadenfreud. In this game, Igor must build another monster to enter into the contest and rescue Eva. However, before he can do that, he must win other smaller tournaments, in order to qualify. There are 6 tournaments to complete before you and Igor can become a truly great scientist and enter the science fair. To win, you must first build a creature.

You begin the game by visiting the recycling center, where you can scrounge parts from recycled monsters: head, body, two arms and two legs. Take this basic monster out around the world of Malaria and find other creatures to do battle with. If you beat an opponent, you will be rewarded with items like flowers, rocks, slime, plants, etc. With these items, you can purchase new, better body parts to upgrade your monster, and improve the chances of it beating the more battle ready creatures in the tournaments. You can also buy potions to use during battle that can either help your creature, or hinder your opponent.

Combat has two parts. You must play a puzzle style game, somewhat similar to the classic game of Tetris, in order to gain power for your combat moves. This is done by matching falling colored blocks into groups and exploding them with the same colored "burst blocks." The adjacent same colored blocks will disappear from the screen, leaving room for more blocks to fall down. Each time you eliminate blocks from the screen, you get closer to filling the power gauge for various fighting moves, like right punch, left kick, or a super Evil Bone Combo, that will really get your opponent's attention. Your opponent will be fighting back, so you must fill your gauges and knock him out before he does the same to you. With the creatures you encounter around Malaria this is easier to do than the creatures inside the tournaments. With the tougher opponents, you really need to upgrade your monsters as much as possible.

At heart, IGOR: The Game is a simple puzzle game, but is made more interesting by having a plot and an ultimate goal. Each puzzle style combat you complete gets you closer to that goal. These fast paced dual combat/puzzles, along with the wide variety of cute characters will provide hours of addictive fun. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to go see the movie that inspired the game.

Also available for PC and Wii.
