Adam’s Venture, Episode 2: Solomon’s Secret

Review by Angie Kibiloski

Adam’s Venture, Episode 2: Solomon’s Secret (Retail $19.99 for download) is the second in an episodic series of action adventure titles from Iceberg Interactive.  The series is set in the 1920’s, and based around biblical references like the Garden of Eden and King Solomon’s Treasure, though the story is not overtly religious in nature.  The hero, Adam, makes his way through the adventure with his wits and common sense, using his head to problem solve instead of violence, making this a perfect series for younger players.  The linear set up of game play, as well as the relatively easy puzzles, make this a great title for beginners in the adventure genre as well.  Adventure aficionados who have been pointing and clicking for years may not find this series challenging enough, but its nice to find a game that can be enjoyed by new players and not just the seasoned few.

The first episode of the series, The Search for the Garden of Eden, introduced Adam and the other characters, and sent them on a quest in search of the legendary Eden.  They were met with resistance from a hugely powerful company with nefarious motives, and narrowly escaped the adventure alive.  When we meet back up with Adam in Solomon’s Secret, he is on the run from the Clairvaux Corporation with his girlfriend, Evelyn.  While continuing their search for the Garden, they get caught up in the mystery and adventure of finding the equally legendary treasure of King Solomon.  With Clairvaux nipping at their heels, danger will try to find them in every location.

The setting for these titles is interesting; both from the geography of places like Jerusalem, and historically with a look back at the 1920’s.  The game play is 3rd person, with basic keyboard controls.  It isn’t an open world, so finding your way through the scenes and events of the story is fairly straightforward.  I won’t say that the game holds your hand, but it certainly walks you through the journey one step at a time.  As I said before, this is a fantastic thing for younger players, or players who are new to the adventure genre.  So many titles in the genre can be frustrating to even the most experienced gamers, with puzzles that can take hours to figure out and unlock the next step of the adventure.  The puzzles in Adam’s Venture are challenging enough to require a little planning and scouting of the environment, and provide a sense of achievement after solving, but can be completed in a relatively short period of time, allowing the story to progress without too much trouble.

A great thing about this series is that there aren’t monsters jumping out at you, or the threat of some unknown evil lurking in darkened corners, and the answer to all obstacles is not to blow them to bits.  Adam’s Venture is a thinking adventure, with no violence, and an undertone of good values.  Instead of teaching that guns are the answer, Adam finds his way through trouble with a clear head and strong heart, fitting quite well within the biblical settings of the series.  I’d recommend Adam’s Venture, Episode 2: Solomon’s Secret, as well as the first episode and any future episodes of the series, to players who have not yet been hardened by the genre’s more intense titles.  If you like blood and guts, or codes that take hours of hunting to decipher, this game is not for you, but if the thought of taking a romp through historic middle eastern territories in search of ancient wonders appeals to you, this series will be right up your alley.  It’s good wholesome fun fit for all ages to play.  Find both episodes at www.iceberg-interactive.com and www.amazon.com.
