Aliens in the Attic

Review by Angie Kibiloski

Aliens in the Attic (Retail $29.99), from Playlogic, is an arcade style game for the Nintendo DS based around the recent family movie by the same name. You get to play as the 3 main character kids, Tom, Jake, and Hannah. Aliens have invaded their home, taken control of the adults’ minds, and plan to take over the world! The brave and inventive kids have to find a way to stop the aliens and release the adults from their control. Battle both aliens and their fighting robots, discover awesome alien weapons, and build your own from regular household items, while making your way through a huge house. You’ll need the special talents of each of the 3 kids to complete your mission.

Tom is the brains of the operation. He can craft weapons from found objects, hack through alien locked doors, and understand how to operate the complex alien technology. Jake is the biggest of the kids, and also the strongest. He can carry the larger weapons, and move aside heavy objects. Hannah is the youngest, and cannot carry any weapons, but she is little and can fit into small spaces, as well as perform a special double jump to reach high spots. They will meet up with various alien robots that can fire lasers, fireballs, and bombs. These enemies will be scattered throughout each level. At the end of a level, you’ll run into a huge robot or one of the main aliens who control all of the robots. These aliens are bigger and harder to beat, and each presents its own special challenge to the kids. The found object weapons that can be used are the air gun, slingshot, and spud gun. These can all be upgraded with other found objects. You also have access to grenades. The alien tech you discover includes an alien gun, flash gadget that stuns aliens, gravity gadget to lift things up, shield gadget to protect you from enemy fire, and the sonic amplifier gadget to destroy enemies with sound waves. Shooting is easy, either by using the directional control pad with the buttons to fire, or the stylus on the touch screen for more precision.

The alien fighting arcade fun takes you through 25 levels and 5 different locations in the kids’ vacation house, with each level providing new obstacles to overcome. You’ll love using all the different weapons to battle robots and boss aliens. Aliens in the Attic will keep you on your toes dodging the laser beams and bombs that the robots send your way, not to mention the giant flailing arms of some of the huge boss aliens. You will be kept entertained by the variety of rooms to run through, weapons to wield, and the number of different aliens and robots to go up against. This is a fun and unique arcade experience that you won’t want to put down. Run, jump, shoot, and enjoy! Also available for PC, Wii, and Playstation.
