Battle of Giants: Dragons
(Retail $29.99), is a Nintendo DS game from Ubisoft that puts you
in control of a powerful dragon, attempting to rid the world of a race of evil
dragons. Long ago, when humans made sport out of hunting dragons, the Ebebu
dragons joined with the Salmu dragons to create a new world, Tammabukku, where
all dragons could live free. The Salmu dragons were corrupted by their power and
began to dominate the Ebebu dragons by stealing away all of their gems, the
source of a dragon’s power. The Ebebu dragons need your help to defeat the evil
Salmu, recover all of the stolen gems, and regain control and peace in
Tammabukku. By learning fighting and magical skills from your mentor, you will
rise to become a powerful dragon.
There are 4 regions of
Tammabukku which you must free from the Salmu, each controlled by a different
elemental type of dragon: Wind, Fire, Ice, and Earth. Each type has strengths in
different types of fighting. For instance, Ice dragons are particularly good at
attacks using the head, and Fire dragons excel at breath attacks. Your mentor,
Ninnurtu, will instruct you in how to use each fighting style, as well as more
practical skills like how to fly, how to use your fire breath to clear trees
from your path, and how to stomp down on boulders from the air. As you roam
around each region, you will encounter Salmu dragons along the path. Each time
you run into one, you must join him on the battlefield. Through a series of
stylus actions, you attack the other dragon until one of you loses all of your
health points. Each time you defeat a dragon, you are awarded with either a new
Gem, or a new element with which to customize your dragon. You can change the
shape and size of his body parts as well as the color of each part.
The gems you will collect,
when equipped on your dragon’s body, activate special attack moves that your
dragon can use in battle. Each gem is a different move for a different body
part, and they have varying damage points and benefits if used by one of the
four elemental types of dragons. You win these gems as you defeat dragons, or
you can acquire them through codes printed on some of the trading cards. In
addition to the DS game, there is a trading card game that can be
purchased. Included in the game is a starter deck of 15 cards. The game play is
similar to other popular dueling card games on the market, and works like a
complicated version of the classic game of War.
Battle of Giants: Dragons
is an addictive little game. Battling the other dragons is really cool, and easy
enough to pick up so that even younger players will feel the accomplishment of
winning. Even just roaming around the different regions is fun, while you
breathe fireballs, destroy rocks, and gracefully fly around the skies. There is
even a multiplayer option so you can wirelessly do battle with your friends.
With the combination of the DS title and the card game, this would make a
really great holiday gift for the boys, or even girls in your life.
