Best of E3 2010

Written by Angie Kibiloski

Okay, so every year I go to the E3 gaming convention in Los Angeles and, afterwards, tell you all about the awesome new games I’m excited about. Last year, I had a hard time choosing my 5 favorite products from the show, because all of the companies, large and small, really had stellar line ups. This year, I’m struggling to choose 5 that are cool enough to get me truly excited. There were many games that blew me away last year, and I left the show enthusiastic about everything. As a whole, this year’s show was disappointing, and offered very few products that were really different and unique, that could capture my imagination and leave me wide eyed. Even some of my favorite companies, who always deliver something amazing and fresh, left me thinking that they didn’t put their full creative effort into their line up this time around. Ah well, having said that, I have managed to sift out 3 impressive products from among the mediocre crowd, which stand out as rays of hope for the rest of the gaming year, and which I am genuinely excited to play. Enjoy.

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, from TT Games and WBIE

Who doesn’t like the LEGO games? You get to control cute little LEGO versions of famous characters, and smash up the LEGO built environments. It is cartoon violence at its most fun. Nobody bleeds, they just break apart and get funny little frowny faces. Having played in the LEGO worlds of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Batman in the past, now you get to venture to Hogwarts and dive into the magical world of Harry Potter, based on the first 4 years of the saga. Similar to the previous titles, but with a twist, as your little LEGO Harry and his friends have magical powers, so you can interact with the LEGO world like never before.

 3DS, from Nintendo

The entertainment trend is going full blast towards 3D nowadays, and Nintendo has jumped aboard with something pretty darned cool: a Nintendo DS with 3D technology. You can now hold 3D games in the palm of your hand with the brand new 3DS. You might think that something so small might not deliver a convincing 3D image, but amazingly, it does it quite well. And, it does it without the need for those annoying 3D glasses! There was no line at E3 nearly as long as the line to see this new system, and those who stood in line for hours walked away very satisfied that they got a peek at this product.

Fallout: New Vegas, from Bethesda

Of course, Fallout 3 is one of my all time favorite games, and anything Fallout is going to get me excited, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that this next offering in the franchise ranks among my top of the show. It is not a DLC for Fallout 3, but a brand new title, with a unique character, in a different part of the world. We leave the Capital Waste behind, and start a whole new adventure in New Vegas. The environments and game play are similar to Fallout 3, so lovers of that game will slip into this one with ease, and continue to enjoy exploring new areas of a familiar and beloved world.
