Camping Mama: Outdoor
Adventures
Review by Angie Kibiloski
Camping Mama: Outdoor
Adventures (Retail $29.99) is Majesco Entertainment’s latest in the
Cooking Mama franchise games for the Nintendo DS. This time out,
you’ll join Mama, and Papa too, as they take their kids on an island camping
trip. You can play as either of the kids, Ringo or Ichigo, changing characters
whenever you like. Enjoy classic Mama style mini games, all having
something to do with camping or the outdoors, along side fun treasure hunting
and adventuring action. With 38 levels containing 100 unique mini games, you’ll
have many hours of fun camping with Mama and her family.
As you unlock new areas of the
island to explore, you’ll visit forests, mountains, and the sea. Walk through
maze like adventure maps, shaking trees, moving rocks and bushes, and navigating
other obstacles to find treasure and hidden mini games. The treasures you find
could appear in your scrapbook of collections, be used in mini games, or
decorate and furnish your campsite. In each area, as well as in each mini game,
Mama or Papa will be waiting to guide you and reward you for a job well done.
Be careful not to bump into any of the bears, monkeys, bees, and other creatures
moving around the maps, because they will take one of your health hearts. They
move in a set pattern though, so with a little study and a keen sense of timing,
you’ll have no trouble avoiding their paths.
I was impressed with how many
different kinds of mini games there were. Each new activity seemed to be a
unique style of game, so playing mini game after mini game never got old. They
are all stylus based games, and each has to do with camping or an outdoor
activity in some way, whether that is cutting wood for a fire, crafting a
slingshot, gathering fruit for dinner, or catching pretty butterflies in a net.
If you don’t quite get 100% in a game, and you want to perfect your performance,
you can find all of the mini games you’ve played in the Challenge area of the
game menu. It’s very rewarding when you achieve gold status on a game and Mama
tells you she’s impressed.
The Mama games have
always been good, clean, family friendly fun, and this title is no different.
Camping Mama: Outdoor Adventures would be a fantastic gift for anyone who
owns a Nintendo DS, kids and adults alike. The mini games are so much
fun, you’ll feel like you’ve been camping and enjoyed all the outdoor activities
yourself. Make S’mores, pitch a tent, swing on vines, skip stones, and much,
much more, all without leaving home. Have fun camping!
