Larva Mortus

Reviewed by Angie Kibiloski

Larva Mortus (Retail $9.99), from Rake in Grass and Meridian 4, is an arcade style action title that pits your hero against the rising forces of darkness. You are a brave and skilled agent of good, crossing the globe in search of an evil artifact and the warlock intent on using its powers. You must battle vile, undead creatures and nasty monsters to recover the pieces of the artifact. The splattering blood and bile, along with the creepy soundtrack will really get you into the mood of this addicting action horror. The title is a download and can be purchased from the websites of Rake in Grass, Meridian 4, and Steam, an online gaming network.

While on your main quest, you come across smaller missions that will help you hone your combat skills, like clearing a city of all the undead, saving lost souls trapped inside a house or forest, and defeating boss monsters who are terrorizing the land. You will collect an arsenal of weapons as you progress, like a medieval sword, crossbow, and a canon! The canon is SO cool, and really packs a punch. You collect these weapons by defeating monsters, or discovering them inside crates, barrels, and caskets that are scattered throughout each quest area. You will also find other items such as ammo, extra score points, and power ups. The power ups only last a short time, but they can be very beneficial while you have them. When you gain enough score points, you increase your hero’s level. Each time you level up, you are given the chance to increase one of your abilities one point. These abilities include resistance to injury, faster health regeneration after being injured, quicker movement, and more.

The missions range from fairly easy, denoted by 1 skull symbol, up to extremely hard, denoted by 6 skull symbols. I would save the harder ones until you have leveled up several times and boosted your various abilities somewhat. If you do die, never fear, just redo the level. If you do have to redo a level, the entire layout of that level is changed, so that if you have to play it several times over, it will never get stale. The gameplay mechanics are very simple. Just move around with your basic WASD keys and aim and shoot with your mouse.

I’m not sure why this game is so addictive. Perhaps because the style of the game harkens back to the classics arcade games, and stands out in a world filled with huge, complex, MMO shooters. Maybe because the landscape of the missions is randomly generated, making for endless replay. Or, it could just be the fun of hacking or blasting your way through 30 different types of supernatural monsters, all the while backed up by a creepy orchestral score and the occasional eerie whisper or laugh. Whatever the reason, if you want to have hours of monster slaying enjoyment, Larva Mortus is my recommendation for a great downloadable title.
