Get the Most from Yourself
This is the twentieth article in a series from
the book titled Get The MOST From Yourself, by Terry Kibiloski, copyright
1996.
The human system is similar to the personal
computer system, with three major parts - the body (hardware), the mind
(software), and the spirit, or soul, (user).
We are spirits having a human experience!

To maintain the human system it's important to
understand:
- Body specialists (doctors) help maintain
our human body.
- Mind specialists (psychologists) help
maintain our human mind.
- Spirit, or soul, specialists (priests,
ministers, rabbis, etc.) teach us how to effectively use our body and mind.
The ideal teacher is the Creator of our body and mind.
If you can understand the similarity between the
computer system and the human system, you are on your way to getting the MOST
from yourself. Let's now look at some important principles.
- As the computer operator uses the hardware
and software to have a computing experience, our spirit uses the body and
mind to have a human experience
- Our overall health depends upon a
harmonious relationship between our body, mind and spirit
- Our human system seeks harmony and ease,
not dis-ease
- We are spirits having a human experience.
Last month, we showed you how personal harmony
is critical to our success as human beings. This month, we show you how your
personal human system relates to the larger human system.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was speaking of harmony
for the larger human system when he said "If civilization is to survive, we must
cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of
all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace." Peter E. Terzick
referred to this harmony as brotherhood when he said "It is the wisdom of
Lincoln and the warmth of Gandhi. It is the humility of Jesus, the humbleness of
Muhammed, and the humanitarianism of Confucius."
Our overall success depends upon the harmony
(love) we have with other human beings. To understand this important principle,
we only need to compare the ill feelings we get from a scorn, or a rude remark,
to the positive power of a smile, or a hug. When we express love through a hug,
or a smile, we feel the same positive power as the receiver of that hug or
smile. We create a WIN-WIN situation. We win, and the receiver wins.
It's important to create WIN-WIN situations in
every aspect of our lives, both personal and business. These positive
relationships help us maintain good physical, mental, and spiritual health, and
are essential to our overall success.
Recent studies suggest our thoughts (motives)
can dramatically affect those around us. Have you ever been in a situation where
you could "feel" the tension without anyone mentioning it, or where you could
feel the love without a word being spoken? This is a common feeling.
While we don't understand how this works, we do
experience it and see it happening around us. Animals and children are keenly
aware of the thoughts (motives) of others. Animals instinctively sense our
feelings of fear and love. Children are drawn toward loving people.
Think about the people you know who either
generate tension wherever they go, or simply glow with love and kindness. No
words need to be spoken for the feeling to permeate the situation. Then think of
the way these two very different people are treated. Which one is the winner?
Which one would you consider successful?
Just as our body needs food to stay healthy, our
spirit needs love. It is the key to happiness and success. When love is lacking
in our lives, very little is possible in the way of healthy relationships, self
fulfillment, and overall success. When love is overflowing in our lives,
everything is possible.
Just as our physical cells need to be in harmony
with other cells around them to stay healthy, we, as human cells in the overall
body of humankind, need to be in harmony with the other humans around us. If we
are not in harmony with others around us, we contribute to a growing disease
that can destroy us and the overall body of humankind. It is a very simple
principle that affects everything in our universe. Harmony (love) is essential
for overall success of the human system, whether it is our own body as a human
system, or the greater human system that encompasses all people.
The greatest philosophers, religious leaders,
and even musicians like the Beatles have been trying to tell us this throughout
the ages. Do you remember the songs "All you need is love" and "Give peace a
chance"? These songs, and many like them, tried to impress on us that love is
essential for us to succeed as a person, and as a human race.
The bumper sticker that asks "Have you hugged
your kids today?" is packed with wisdom. It is not just the physical hug that is
important, it is the love behind the hug that will transform both you and your
child. I suggest that all the crime bills in the world will not transform young
criminals as fast as sincere hugs, in many shapes and forms. A hug does not have
to be physical. It can be in the form of a smile, or a kind word, or a friendly
gesture, or a kind deed. I firmly believe we can transform the world with
"hugs." During the peace process in the Middle East, it was encouraging to see
world leaders hug each other as well as shake hands.
A few years ago, I decided it was much more
important to give my daughter "hugs" at Christmas than to give her "things." So,
I began giving her one full day of my time as a gift for the holidays. Anything
she wants to do with me on that day is acceptable. It is amazing how important
that day has become to her. She carefully plans it out for weeks.
The most important gift you can give someone is
a loving "hug," from your spirit. This can truly change the world one person at
a time, beginning with YOU.
Much more next month.
