Get the Most from Yourself
This is the fifth article in a series from the
book titled Get The MOST From Yourself, by Terry Kibiloski, copyright
1996.
The human system is similar to the personal
computer system, with three major parts - the body (hardware), the mind
(software), and the spirit, or soul, (user).
We are spirits having a human experience!

To maintain the human system it's important to
understand:
- Body specialists (doctors) help maintain
our human body.
- Mind specialists (psychologists) help
maintain our human mind.
- Spirit, or soul, specialists (priests,
ministers, rabbis, etc.) teach us how to effectively use our body and mind.
The ideal teacher is the Creator of our body and mind.
If you can understand the similarity between the
computer system and the human system, you are on your way to getting the MOST
from yourself. Let's now look at some important principles.
- As the computer operator uses the hardware
and software to have a computing experience, our spirit uses the body and
mind to have a human experience
- Our overall health depends upon a
harmonious relationship between our body, mind and spirit
- Our human system seeks harmony and ease,
not dis-ease
Our body is a tremendous creation, made up of
millions of cells, each working independently yet in total harmony with each
other. Each of our cells is a living organism, each with its own purpose. If
these cells work in harmony with each other, and are at ease, we enjoy a healthy
body. If these cells work in disharmony with each other, we have dis-ease. Each
of our cells depends on us, the spirit, to make healthy decisions to keep them
in harmony and at ease.
To get the MOST from yourself, you need to have
a healthy body. To have a healthy body, you need to give each cell what it needs
to stay at ease - air, water, food, exercise and rest. Without these basic
needs, a cell can get weak and even die, and then our total body is in a state
of dis-ease because the balance, the harmony, has been disturbed.
So, think of yourself as a protector of many
living cells. They are totally dependent upon your choices for air, water, food,
exercise and rest. Are you providing each of your cells with what they need? Are
you breathing plenty of fresh air, drinking plenty of fresh water, eating plenty
of fresh food, getting plenty of exercise, and enjoying a sufficient amount of
rest? Or are you depriving your cells of oxygen by smoking, drinking chemicals,
eating junk food, being a couch potato, and getting little rest? It is important
to realize
- You are the sum total of all the choices
you have made up to now.
Is it time for some new choices?
Health is the one thing the poorest person can
have for free, but the richest person cannot buy? A Blue Cross Blue Shield of
Kentucky ad posed the question, "Is your lifestyle a death wish?" An equally
important question is, "Does your lifestyle support your life goals?"
It is important to realize the body's natural
state is health. Given the proper air, water, food, exercise, and rest, the body
will do its best to remain healthy. This is automatic. Built into your body is a
natural ability to heal itself. For example, when you cut your finger, your
system instantly springs into action to fight the intruding germs, clean the
wound, and restore the area to its natural state. If your body is in good shape,
and this is the big IF, the healing will progress without a hitch. If your body
is not in good shape, a simple cut can be the beginning of an early death. This
is true for everything from a simple cut to a serious disease. The better shape
your body is in, the better it is able to cope with the daily perils of life.
Your body is a walking miracle. Your heart beats
thirty six million times a year, pumping more than six hundred thousand gallons
of blood through more than sixty thousand miles of veins, arteries, and tubing.
Your lungs filter life-giving oxygen through six hundred million pockets of
folded flesh while they rid your body of gaseous wastes. Your brain is the most
complex structure in the universe. Its thirteen billion nerve cells file away
every perception, every sound, every taste, every smell, and every action you
have experienced since the day of your birth. Working in unison with your brain
are four million pain-sensitive structures, two hundred thousand temperature
detectors, and more than five thousand touch detectors. Within you is enough
atomic energy to destroy, and rebuild, any of the world's great cities. Like any
complex organism, though, it needs the proper care to remain healthy.
To keep your body healthy, it is important to
give it the five essential elements it needs for good health - air, water, food,
exercise, and rest.
Air -
This is the most critical element to good health. The body can only survive a
short time without a constant supply of air. When the air is polluted, due to
smoking or the environment, each of the hundreds of billions of cells in the
body begin to suffocate, and soon die.
Water -
Seventy percent of the body is water, as is seventy percent of every living
thing on this planet. It is essential to keep a constant supply of fresh water
in our system to help our body move nutrients to all cells and eliminate waste.
Food -
Every cell in our bodies needs a constant supply of fuel to maintain the energy
level needed to stay healthy and perform their specific tasks. Fuel comes from
good natural food, not from chemical brews and synthetic snacks filled with
harmful chemicals.
Exercise
- The old saying "Use it or lose it" says it all. If a cell is not exercised, it
becomes weak. Serious disease attacks weak areas of the body.
Rest -
The body requires daily periods of rest to effectively repair and regenerate
damaged cells. Without the proper rest, the body becomes weak and breaks down.
Good health is not the luck of the draw. It
comes from giving the body fresh air and water, good food, sufficient exercise
and rest. Make this your daily routine and you will have the best health
possible.
Much more next month.
