Phineas and Ferb: Ride Again

Review by Angie Kibiloski

You can always rely on Disney to make quality children’s entertainment. The Disney Channel television show, Phineas and Ferb, which stars two very inventive and imaginative brothers, is a great example of this, and it just got even better. Now, Disney Interactive Studios has come out with a great new Nintendo DS game based on the show, called Phineas and Ferb: Ride Again (Retail $29.99), which lets fans of the show get right in the action with the title characters. In this arcade style scrolling adventure, you control both Phineas and Ferb as you travel around their town causing havoc. Their mission is to gather parts in order to build and upgrade cool vehicles, like a skateboard and a surfboard, which you will get to use in a fun activity, like skateboard racing. Collect parts, and other goodies, avoid the eagle eye of their party-pooping sister, Candice, and above all, have fun!

Each brother has special skills, like the ability to use a jet pack or a drill, so you really need to play them cooperatively. You play one brother at a time, but can easily toggle back and forth between them as needed. Occasionally, you will play a special level where you get to be Perry the Platypus, and go up against Dr. Doofenshmirtz and his baddies. Perry is so cute, and knocking out bad guys with his fedora is just neat. There are also mini-games that you must complete. When you want to upgrade or build an item, you have to play one of several types of mini-game, like spray-painting, hammering nails, or choosing a matching part from a conveyor belt. You will also have to play a mini-game if you fall off of buildings or ledges too often, and attract Candace’s tattle-telling attention. These games are a bit like Pac-Man, with Phineas and Ferb running around a grid maze collecting screws, while trying to avoid being caught by Candace. Win and her annoyance meter will fill back up and reset. You can also fill her meter by distracting her with treats that you find along the path, like cake and teddy bears. Aside from the stuff you need to use in the game, like screws and spare parts, you will also collect surprise goodies that you can view and admire back at the boys’ house.

Each of the four levels requires quite a lot of work to complete, with a variety of different activities to hold a player’s attention. In addition to regular play, there’s even more fun to be had in Multiplayer mode, using 2 Nintendo DS units, and either one or two game cartridges. You can also access more features online through DGamer. This is a community for Disney gamers to go and socialize with others, view the achievements that you’ve unlocked in the game, and much more. Phineas and Ferb: Ride Again is a super fun and exciting title, which is easy to pick up and learn to play. Any kid who likes the Disney Channel show is sure to go nuts when they unwrap this game for the holidays. For non-violent, imaginative fun for all ages, Disney sure knows how to deliver.
