Editors' Choice Storage Device

Seagate FreeAgent External Hard Drives

Reviewed by Angie Kibiloski

The new FreeAgent line of external hard drives from Seagate offers easy to use, portable, stylish options for all your backup and storage needs. The line consists of 3 drive models: FreeAgent Go (Retail $99.99-$149.99), FreeAgent Desk (Retail $129.99-$179.99), and FreeAgent XTreme (Retail $159.99-$209.99). Each drive comes in a variety of capacities, and is loaded with the Seagate Manager, a very user friendly program designed to help you backup your data easily and efficiently. The design of these drives is sleek and elegant, built to compliment your desktop, not clutter it.

The FreeAgent Go is an ultra slim device that fits easily in your laptop bag or purse, perfect to use either as a backup drive for your laptop, or to transport your files from your home to your office or other locations with ease. It is available in 250GB, 320GB, or 500GB, and in a rainbow of attractive colors, including Think Pink, Forest Green, and Sky Blue. FreeAgent Desk and FreeAgent XTreme have larger capacities, at 500GB, 640GB, 1TB, and 1.5TB. The FreeAgent Desk and FreeAgent GO both use a USB 2.0 connection, but the FreeAgent XTreme also has the options for eSATA and Firewire. The Desk and XTreme models come with a detachable base, to allow you to position the device flat on your desktop or sit it up vertically to save space. The Desk comes in an attractive silver, and the XTreme in classic black.

The Seagate Manager software is loaded onto your PC the first time one of these drives is connected. With this program, you can quickly set up a personal backup plan, schedule periodic backups, and encrypt sensitive files. You can also sync files from multiple PCs, as long as they are both running the same OS. In addition to the security of folder encryption, you can protect your stored files with DrivePass, a feature that password protects the entire drive. Customizing which folders and file types to backup is easy, and the actual backup process is fast. After you set your backup preferences, you can save your configuration so that the next time a backup is scheduled, the process will start automatically with those saved settings. If your drive is not connected during a scheduled backup, the process will start next time you plug it in.

The Seagate family of FreeAgent external hard drives is a well rounded line that will satisfy your individual storage and backup needs. With so many capacities to choose from, you are sure to find one that suits. Just the FreeAgent Desk and XTreme would draw my attention to this company, but with the attractive and compact FreeAgent GO on board, this product line is really something special.
