Secret Files: Tunguska

Reviewed by Angie Kibiloski

On the morning of June 30, 1908, in the Tunguska region of Siberia in Russia, an object streaked through the sky towards the earth and created an incredible explosion that changed the terrain for ever. The huge column of fire from the blast started fires that would last for days and destroy everything around it. The shock from the apparent impact could be felt in Germany and even parts of the United Sates. Was it an impact from a meteor? There is no crater to suggest such a thing. Could it have been a nuclear explosion? But then the area would be burning hot with radiation. Or was it a UFO? Where are the remains of the ship? To this day the question remains as to what exactly happened during the Tunguska Event?

The Adventure Company seeks to shed some light on a couple of the theories surrounding this event with their new game, Secret Files: Tunguska (Retail $29.99). You set out as Nina Kalenkov, a young girl searching for her kidnapped father. Through clues she uncovers, you embark on a journey to locate both her father and the reason behind his disappearance, the Tunguska Event. With the help of a cute young archeologist, Max Gruber, who you control through some chapters of the game play, you travel the globe looking for evidence. Visit Siberia, Cuba, Ireland, and more. Dangers come at every turn, in the form of a secret sect in black robes, a rich mastermind out to rule the world, and betrayals from unexpected sources.

The environments are beautifully rendered, and the characters are rich and diverse. The dialog is even top notch and entertaining, both in the interactions with other characters and Nina's and Max's inner ramblings. The challenges in the game consist of using your logic and inventory items to make your way through the story, from finding a way out of a Russian prison to breaking into a secure facility, to making primitive medicine for a Siberian tribesman. Whatever the challenge, the game keeps Nina and Max on their toes and keeps your brain working over time. There is a helpful Diary feature that gives you a recap of your progress so far, and offers hints to current puzzles if you want them.

Secret Files: Tunguska, from The Adventure Company, is a fascinating journey to parts of the world that you might not venture to normally. The beauty, the mystery, the adventure, and the danger all combine to make this game a particularly inviting experience. Who knows, you might even uncover the truth that has eluded so many since that otherwise unremarkable morning in 1908. Get immersed in the mystery, get Secret Files: Tunguska.
