Editors' Choice Internet Radio

Slacker Personal Radio and G2 Player

Reviewed by Angie Kibiloski

Slacker Radio is an Internet radio service that allows you to create and customize your radio stations to fit your own tastes by genres, artists, and even selected songs. Plus, not only can you listen from your account on the Web site, http://www.slacker.com, you can take your personal stations with you on the G2 Player (Retail $199.99 for 25 station model, $249.99 for 40 station model), which syncs to your account preferences wirelessly whenever you connect to the network. You can have a free account, or upgrade to a Premium account for more customizable features. With the G2 Player, which can be used with both types of account, you will always have a wide selection of your favorite music streaming live at your fingertips.

The Slacker free account is easy to set up and use. Once you have created a user name, you can start to customize your favorite stations and save them to your profile. The Web site provides ready-made stations by genre, like Modern Punk, UK Hits, Classic Rock, Jazz, etc. You can choose any of these to add to your favorites or send to your G2 Player. You can also search for an artist, like Aerosmith, Massive Attack, The Smiths, etc, and Slacker will create a custom station designed around that artist. For instance, your newly created Massive Attack station might stream with bands such as Sneaker Pimps, Tricky, Portishead, and the like. An Aerosmith station might be built around bands like The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, The Doors, etc. You will be able to connect to all of your hand crafted stations as well as those you have saved under Favorites from your online account. Or, you can send them to your G2 Player.

Traveling with the G2 Player is like having the Slacker Web site with you all the time, without requiring an Internet connection. You will need to be connected to a wireless network when you first configure your stations on the player, and whenever you wish to add new stations, but once it is programmed, no connection is needed. You can listen to any station that you have saved or created, mark the currently playing song as a favorite or banned song, and skip to the next song on the station if you don’t like the one being streamed at that moment. The songs marked as favorites will be noted to be played more frequently, and the banned songs will never be played again. With the free account, you may only skip ahead 5 songs per station every hour, but if you upgrade to a Premium account, you may skip as many songs as you like.

Slacker is not just an internet radio service, but a provider of a fully customized musical experience. You no longer have to only be satisfied with preset stations that might or might not play the artists and songs that you like. You have the power to control what your radio station plays. Slacker Radio is part of the new frontier in Internet radio, and the G2 player is a convenient device to carry that power wherever you go.
