The Witcher: Enhanced
Reviewed by Angie Kibiloski
One of the best PC games of
last year has been upgraded and made even better. When Atari released
The Witcher in 2007, it was instantly, and widely, successful. This year,
with The Witcher: Enhanced (Retail $39.99), the award winning title has
been taken to the next level. There are 2 brand new adventures to add to the
original story, additional dialogue animations, improved cut-scenes, smoother
gameplay, a more user-friendly inventory, faster load times, and increased game
stability. The Witcher: Enhanced is a must for both fans of the original
edition, and those gamers new to the title.
The Witcher is an
Action/Adventure/ RPG, from Polish developers CD Projekt RED, based on
the popular fantasy saga by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. You will be thrown
into his dark world of magic and battle, fighting to maintain your honor,
goodness, and life. As Geralt of Rivia, you will be taken through beautifully
rendered lands in search of both the enemy forces that threaten the future of
the Witchers, and the return of your mysteriously vanished memories. Geralt is a
famous Witcher, talented in the arts of battle, magical Signs, potion making,
and monster hunting. Along the way, you will be forced to battle against armies
of warriors, demons, and sorcerers, as well as the prejudice and malice of the
common people, who have grown to consider the Witchers as a blight. Witchers are
the individuals born to fight the forces of evil, both human and monster, that
threaten to ravage their world. Having lost the favor of the people they
protect, their numbers have dwindled. Along with a handful of allies, you must
rally your courage and combat the darkness.
With a dynamic and intricate
storyline, driven by the choices you make in each chapter, and illustrated with
beautiful cut-scenes, The Witcher: Enhanced is a fully immersive role
playing experience. Make alliances with different characters, choose which
battles to take part in, and mold your individual story to suit your own gaming
personality. Each decision you make will determine the course of your destiny.
The battles you will engage in throughout the story utilize skill sets that
Geralt must develop as the game progresses. You will gain sword fighting
techniques as well as adeptness in using Signs. The battles are played by
employing perfectly timed clicks of the mouse, to execute increasingly complex
fighting moves, after choosing the correct attack style for the type of opponent
you are facing. This is a surprisingly low stress battle style, and easy to pick
up for even beginning players.
On top of all the added
content and improved features, the Enhanced version comes packed with
other goodies to enjoy. There is a bonus DVD containing the D'jinii Adventure
Editor that allows players to create or modify their own adventures. The "Making
of" DVD promises 180 minutes of never-before-seen bonus material. Two music CDs,
the Game Soundtrack and the "Inspired by" Music, round out this special
collection of bonus material. You will also find the Official Game Guide that
walks you though all of the quests in each adventure chapter, "The Witcher"
short story by Andrzej Sapkowski, and a map of the world of The Witcher.
The Witcher: Enhanced
would be a great step up for players who enjoyed the original title, or an
enticing new experience for newcomers who will be discovering Geralt’s world for
the first time. The characters you interact with are fleshed out and
multi-dimensional, the environments beautiful, and the storyline compelling. If
you have any gamers on your holiday gift list, they will thrill to unwrap this
title. If you are the only gamer you know, well then, there is nothing wrong
with treating yourself with a present.
