Borderlands: Game of the Year
Edition
Review by Angie Kibiloski
Last year, 2K Games
released an incredibly cool and addictive RPG/Shooter called Borderlands.
This critically acclaimed title has now been re-released in Borderlands: Game
of the Year Edition (Retail $49.99 for PC, $59.99 for Xbox360 and
PS3). This edition includes access codes to download all 4 of the action
packed add-ons to the game: The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, Mad Moxxi’s
Underdome Riot, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, and Claptrap’s
New Robot Revolution. With the excitement of the original game, and all the
bonus content, this edition of Borderlands is an absolute must for any
hard-core gamer.
Borderlands is an
intuitive, quest based role playing game, partnered with a fast paced, heart
pumping action shooter. You can play alone, as one of 4 treasure hunting
characters, or cooperatively with up to 3 friends. Your character has come to
the arid, lawless planet of Pandora, to find the mythical Vault, rumored to
store untold riches and treasures of the ancient and long dead races of
Pandora. Many hunters have sought the Vault, and many have died amidst the
perils of the planet. You have other Vault seekers to contend with, gangs of
mercenaries, as well as the hideous and wild creatures that inhabit the wastes
of the Borderlands. Collect weapons, ammo, shields, and other devices to help
you defeat any people or beasts that would harm you, while gaining the aid of
the friendlier resident by completing quests for them. Earn money and a
reputation while building your fighting skills and leveling up. With luck, and
a little help from your friends, you might just make it to the Vault in one
piece. All of this exciting action and adventure, and we’ve only just covered
the original game.
The 4 add-on DLCs expand your
game playing enjoyment with many more hours of life threatening fun, in 4 very
unique installments. The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned lands you in a spooky,
fog covered town called Jakobs Cove, where rumors of the undead roaming the
streets have leaked out. The corporation who runs the town might deny such
claims, but I would advise entering VERY heavily armed, because the zombies are
absolutely everywhere. Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot unveils a
deadly tournament of gun slinging champions that feels like a post apocalyptic,
steam punk gladiator arena. Kill or be killed, and entertain the audience while
you’re at it. The Secret Armory of General Knoxx finds you battling the
forces of the Atlas Corporation, who has hired assassins to kill you, in
retaliation for your deeds in the main Borderlands plot line. You are seriously
outnumbered by bigger, badder, and even stranger enemies than before. No
worries, you also have access to bigger, badder, and insanely awesome weapons to
use against them, as well as the added bonus of more levels to achieve.
Finally, in Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution, you have to go up against an
army of the formerly adorable and infinitely helpful Claptrap robots, who are
rising up against society and one of the corporations who rule it. Join with
the Hyperion Corporation, who you have previously been at bloody odds with, and
defeat the increasing masses of killer robots and their leader, the Claptrap
known as Ninja Assassin.
The entire game, both in the
original plot line and the added content, has an awesome visual style. It feels
like you’ve stepped into a gritty graphic novel. The controls, inventory, map,
and HUD are easy to master, and very intuitively designed. Your character isn’t
very customizable, as far as look, name, etc., but you do get to control how
his/her skill sets progress when you level up. There are so many firearms to
choose from, you could switch guns every quest and never get bored with the
selection, though you’re likely to find a couple very useful favorites. As well
as the variety of weapons, you’ll get to drive a bunch of vehicles too,
themselves equipped with fire power. This game combines so many of the great
things about RPGs and shooters, that I can’t really think of anything its
lacking. If you didn’t grab this title when it came out last year, you have to
pick it up now. Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, packaged with all
4 DLCs, gives you the perfect opportunity to enjoy this adventure in its
entirety.
