Editors' Choice DS Game

Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo

Review by Angie Kibiloski

Moshi Monsters is an online social networking game for young kids, which has attracted more than 50 million users in 150 countries over the last 3 years.  Kids can create a free account, adopt an adorable monster, and play games to earn rewards and stuff for their pet.  The Moshi Monsters world has just been expanded onto the Nintendo DS, with Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo (Retail $29.99), from Mind Candy and Activision.  In this new game, you’ll be exploring both new and familiar areas of the Moshi Monsters’ world, trying to gather all sorts of Moshlings, which are little pets for the Moshi Monsters.  By playing games and satisfying the creatures’ needs, you must adopt as many Moshlings as you can to be a part of the new Moshling Zoo.  There are lots of Moshlings to find, making this game packed full of monstrous fun.  As an added treat, you’ll get a special code inside the box to unlock an exclusive Moshling on your online Moshi Monsters account.  He’ll live in your house or zoo, depending on if you are a free or paying member.  There is also a limited edition of the game, available at Toys “R” Us, which comes packaged with a pack of cool trading cards.

The online game community that started all of the fun can be found at www.moshimonsters.com.  You’ll definitely want to take advantage of this site right along with the DS game, to get the full Moshi Monsters experience.  Setting up a free account is as easy as filling in some basic profile information and choosing which type of Moshi Monster you want to adopt.  You even get to choose his color and name.  Each day you can go onto the site and play a bunch of different puzzle games.  These include serving customers in an ice cream shop, brainteasers, block breaking, butterfly catching, and more.  You’ll earn Rox, the in-game currency, which you can use in a variety of stores around Monstro City to buy things for your monster to eat, wear, or use in his house.  Dress up your monster, tend his garden, and interact with cool stuff all around Monstro City.  You can also talk to other players’ monsters who are roaming around town.  Become friends with them, chat, visit their monsters’ houses and leave them notes on their bulletin boards.  If you want to extend your online fun even more, there are tons of extra features that you can get access to by signing up for a paid monthly membership.  But there is plenty of fun to be had for free.

The DS title, Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo gives you a chance to play even more fun puzzle games, this time with cute little pets for your monsters.  You’ll get to explore a number of different landscapes around Monstro City and the Wooly Wilderness, looking for all of the various breeds of Moshlings for your zoo.  When you discover a Moshling roaming in one of the 8 areas of the wild, you’ll have to make it happy in order for it to agree to come live at the zoo.  Some Moshlings require very little to be happy, while others will need you to perform several tasks to satisfy them.  Once you have successfully satisfied a Moshling, it will move into the zoo.  There you can visit, feed, bathe, and play games with it, like foot races and brainteasers.  The more games you play with each Moshling, the happier and healthier it will become, and the higher level it will achieve.  The higher a Moshling’s level, the better it will perform in certain games.  These games will earn you Rox rewards that can be used in town to buy upgrades to each Moshling’s zoo enclosure, hints on how to find specific Moshlings, as well as items you might need to entice other Moshlings to come in out of the wild.  Each Moshling breed has an adult and a baby, which you will discover in egg form.  You’ll have to bring the eggs back to your hatchery and take care of the babies when they hatch.  Collect all of the Moshlings to complete your zoo and the game.

Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo is such a cute DS game, suitable for any young kids, and even fun for parents.  There is no violence in the game, and some of the brainteasers are even educational in nature.  Hand in hand with the online game community, this title can give you and your kids a ton of furry fun collecting and playing with all of the Moshlings and Moshi Monsters.  With 52 unique Moshlings to locate, each with his own adoption requirements, there is always something new to do.  If you want a break from Moshling hunting, play some mini games for a while.  You can spend hours inside this title, as well as in the online game, never getting bored of playing with the sweet little Moshlings and Moshi Monsters.  With the holidays coming up, why not treat your kids to a Moshling zoo of their very own?
