Baron Wittard: Nemesis of Ragnarok

Review by Angie Kibiloski

When I first started playing a lot of computer games, the genre that really hooked me was the classis point and click adventure games, which were dotted with challenging brain puzzles.  This type of game is not as prevalent as it once was, and the titles out there have evolved into more action shooters than classic adventure.  But, every once in a while I come across a title that brings back the pleasure of the classic adventure game.  Baron Wittard: Nemesis of Ragnarok (Retail $26.65), from Iceberg Interactive, is one such title.  I was pleased to discover a game that was suspenseful, intriguing, and challenging, with a compelling back-story, great environmental detail, and spooky sound effects.  If you enjoy this style of game, check out this title and delve into the very interesting world of the eccentric architect, Baron Wittard.

The story revolves around an abandoned building, Wittard Utopia, designed and built by Baron Wittard, who has since gone missing under mysterious circumstances.  Since his disappearance, several other locals have gone missing near the derelict property as well, and talk of the supernatural has begun to circulate.  You have come to look into the rumors surrounding this and put together a story for your publication.  As soon as you enter the building, you find yourself wrapped up in a struggle with ancient forces beyond this world, with ties to Viking mythology.  With the aid of a helpful sprit, you must solve puzzles scattered around the building and unlock a power great enough to defeat the dark force trying to break into our world.  Along the way, I found it quite interesting to learn a little bit about Viking history as well.  Can you solve the secrets of Wittard Utopia before a figure from myth becomes too strong and destroys us all?

The puzzles you encounter are classic logic style puzzles, like code cracking and spatial reasoning.  Clues to many of the puzzles are hidden around the building, but others must be solved out of pure logic and some trial and error.  They are all challenging enough to keep you interested, but not so difficult as to become frustrating.  With some perseverance, you can break through each puzzle successfully.  The only conversations you have are one sided, from your Editor by cell phone, or from the spirit who is giving you guidance, which is a nice break from the drawn out small talk and exposition you get in some adventure games.  The environments are detailed, with many rooms to investigate.  The nature of a derelict building lends itself to some really interesting scenes, full of dark corners, flickering lights, and scattered debris.  Along with the sound effects of dripping water, creaking floors, and goodness knows what else, exploring this building is a little nerve wracking...in a good way.  It doesn’t matter that monsters don’t jump out from every corner and try to eat you; the anticipation of such is scary enough.

I’ve squeezed many hours of fun out of Baron Wittard: Nemesis of Ragnarok, and fully enjoyed the experience.  As an adventure gamer from way back, this title is a pleasant renewal of my love for the genre.  Updated and modern in terms of graphics, puzzle quality, and general playability, this game still keeps true to the classic style and will give any adventurer cause for joy.  You can pick up your copy at the Iceberg Interactive shop at http://www.iceberg-shop.com, starting February 18, 2011.  Pre-orders are available as well.  Enjoy!
